FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
UNM College Republicans believe $3,396 security fee to be a “free speech tax” the university is imposing upon them to force them to cancel their Milo Yiannopoulos event. Please help by making a contribution at GoFundMe.com.
Albuquerque, New Mexico – January 24, 2017 – Since September of 2016, the University of New Mexico (UNM) College Republicans have been working to host Milo Yiannopoulos on their campus. The UNM College Republicans seek to host Milo to encourage discussion of controversial topics and promote a positive learning environment that sparks growth among students while exposing them to different viewpoints. We hope to host Milo to encourage dialogue and expose students to some conservative viewpoints.
Over the past few months, college campuses all across the country have been making efforts to shut down free speech with so called “safe-spaces.” To do so, they are banning conservative speakers from attending their campuses. Although the UNM College Republicans have not been explicitly forced to cancel the event, we were given a $3,396 security fee only two weeks prior to the event. This fee was rationalized based on the expected response the university police anticipate from protests resultant of Milo’s appearance on our campus. We believe this to be a “free speech tax” the university is imposing upon our student organization to force our group to cancel the event. The UNM College Republicans have until January 25th to come up with the fee or we will have to cancel Milo’s appearance.
Unfortunately, we are running out of time to ensure the event proceeds as planned. The UNM College Republicans are asking any interested parties to consider donating to our organization to ensure Milo can appear as planned. We have a GoFundMe page set up and are asking for help, even if that help is getting the word out.
